Home » Girls' Soccer News2007-08 State Champions!!July 31, 2008 By iHigh Staff of Ridgeland High SchoolThe Lady Titans defeated the Lady Hornets from East Central 1-0 to claim the 2008 State 4A Championship. It marked the 6th consecutive season that the Lady Titans are state champs. Senior midfielder Kelsey Givan drove a corner kick ball into the box and senior forward Becca MacNeill hammered the ball past the East Central keeper for the game-winning goal in the 4th minute of play. From there, Ridgeland would maintain ball possession for the majority of the match. The Lady Titans took seven shots on goal (10 total) in the first half alone as compared to just three by East Central. The best scoring chance for the southern champions came after an obstruction foul on sophomore fullback Carmen Bofill. The resulting free kick hit the crossbar and bounced back into play. The rebound was headed on goal, but sophomore keeper CJ Winship would make the save. 7th grade fullback Rhae'ven Ellis would make the majority of defensive tackles, but most were well within the Lady Titan offensive end of the field. She, Bofill, senior Anna Claire Freeman and sophomore Allison Ayers kept the two high scoring forward in check all game. The second half did not prove to be much different than the first half. Senior midfielders Melissa Myers and Givan along with freshman Sloan Bancroft and 8th graders Rachel Harris and Haley Britt would pressure passes, make steals and lay off quality balls to the Titan forwards that offered little relief for the Lady Hornet defense. The trio of Smith, Givan and MacNeill has won a state crown in each of their six Titan seasons. Congratulations to the Titans. State Soccer Champs!! » Be the first to leave a comment
