Ridgeland wins the I10-I20 Shootout

January 15, 2009
Ridgeland High School

In the final contest, the other undefeated team in the tournament, the Lady Admirals of Gulfport, pressed hard from the beginning. Junior forward Carmen Bofill would take a through ball and race to goal just four minutes into the match. Her shot beat the keeper, but bounded off the crossbar and back into the playing field.

On her second breakaway of the first 10 minutes, Bofill would beat the Gulfport keeper and give the Titans a 1-0 lead. A goal by Gulfport evened things just before the half.

Seven minutes into the second half, Bofill would score again. Junior fullback Allison Ayers played a long free kick into junior midfielder Kelly Jarvis. Her pass behind the Gulfport defense froze the keeper and Bofill finished the shot into the upper right corner. The defense; led by Ayers, freshman Haley Britt and eighth graders Rhae'ven Ellis and Allison Bunch and Junior keeper CJ Winship, would shut down Gulfport the rest of the way giving Ridgeland the title.

"The girls really stepped up their intensity in this tournament," said head coach Craig Winship. "We talked about this potentially being the turning point of our season. The girls have not worked harder individually or as a team this year. I am very proud of them."
